Growth Strategy: 3 Questions to Reconnect With Your Business Vision
Before you fix anything, you have to know what you're actually building toward. These are the three questions I ask every client before we touch strategy.
Every business owner who comes to me wants to talk tactics first. The campaign, the funnel, the rebrand, the plan. I understand the urgency — something feels off, and you want it solved. But I don't start there. I start with vision. Because I've never once built a strategy that worked long-term for a business that couldn't answer what it was actually building toward.
Here are the three questions I ask before we touch a single tactic.
1. What does success actually look like for you?
Not the version you think you're supposed to say. Not "more revenue" or "more followers." I mean specifically — what does the day-to-day of a successful version of this business actually look like? Are you working fewer hours? Leading a bigger team? Serving fewer clients at a higher level? Finally taking a real vacation without your phone buzzing the whole time? Most business owners have never said this out loud, specifically. And it's hard to build toward a vision you've never actually defined.
2. Why did you start this in the first place?
This one sounds simple, but it rarely gets a simple answer. Somewhere between the launch and the day-to-day grind, most business owners lose touch with the "why" that got them here. That original reason matters more than people realize. It's usually the thing that made your brand feel true in the first place — and it's often the thing missing from a business that's grown but stopped feeling like it fits anymore. If you can't remember why you started, that's usually the first sign that your vision and your current business have quietly drifted apart.
3. If nothing changed, where would this business be in two years?
This is the question that gets the most honest answers, because it removes the pressure of having the "right" answer. I'm not asking what you hope happens. I'm asking what actually happens if you keep doing exactly what you're doing right now. For some people, that answer is exciting. For most, it's the moment they realize the current path isn't leading where they actually want to go — and that the plateau, the burnout, or the feeling of "stuck" isn't random. It's the natural result of the current direction.
Why these questions come before strategy
Here's what I've learned after doing this for two decades: strategy built on a fuzzy vision doesn't fail because the strategy was wrong. It fails because it was aimed at the wrong target. You can have the best marketing plan, the cleanest systems, and the most talented team — and still end up frustrated, because none of it was ever pointed at what you actually wanted.
These three questions aren't a warm-up. They're the compass. Everything else — your brand, your marketing, your systems — is just the vehicle getting you there.
Sit with these before you sit with a strategist
You don't need me in the room to start answering these. Sit with them this week. Write the answers down, even the ones that feel uncomfortable or unfinished. The goal isn't a perfect answer. It's an honest one. Because once you're clear on where you're actually going, every decision after that — hiring, marketing, pricing, growth — gets a whole lot easier to make.
TL;DR:
Strategy without a clear vision is aimed at the wrong target, no matter how good it looks.
Ask what success actually looks like, specifically — not the version you think you're supposed to say.
Reconnect with why you started. That original reason is often what's missing now.
Ask where you'd be in two years if nothing changed. The honest answer usually reveals the real problem.
Vision isn't a warm-up question. It's the compass everything else gets built around.
